I attended the University of New Orleans during the 2013 Spring Semester to complete the following graduate level course required to add Early Interventionist Birth through Kindergarten certification to my Louisiana teaching certificate: EDSP 6560 Communication and Literacy (3 credits equaling 45 clock hours). The class provided information on typical and atypical language development as well as appropriate prevention and intervention procedures for children during the first five years of development. As part of the course, I was required to respond to reading assignments, conducted three different structured observations on children, focusing on their communication skills, complete an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and an Individualized Education Program (IEP), provide a case history and develop an intervention program for a child with significant speech and language difficulties, review literature on augmentative and alternative communication devices and materials, and participate in class discussions and activities.
