I completed the following graduate level class at the University of New Orleans during the 2012 Summer semester to add Early Interventionist Birth through Kindergarten certification to my Louisiana teaching certificate: EDSP 6030 Health/Physical Considerations for Individuals with Significant Disabilities (3 credits equaling 45 clock hours). This course provided an overview of educational considerations for students who have specific needs related to physical disabilities, including positioning and handling techniques, health care procedures, and adaptation to curriculum and environment. The requirements of this course were to complete quizzes, develop a self-care Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or an Individualized Education Program (IEP), participate in group problem solving activities, complete a fact sheet on a selected physical condition/disability, and be assessed on G-tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning and tracheotomy care, and seizer management.
