Toll, S.& Van Luit J.(2014). The Development Relationship Between Language and Low Early Numeracy Skills Throughout Kindergarten. Exceptional Children, 81 (1) 64-78.
In this article, Toll and Van Luit examine how basic oral language and early numeracy interact with math language. They state that the relationship between language and early numeracy is significant, and that it could predict the future mathematical skills of a student. Focusing on math language, the authors screened 4-5 year old Dutch children, and then followed those with low numeracy skills for 2 years. They find that math language plays a role in early numeracy, and thus general oral language is important to strengthen the performance of both skills.
